Vocabulary Strategies Packet

Must have resource when your students need to further develop age-appropriate vocabulary. This is a resource that focuses on teaching and reviewing a variety of vocabulary strategies. We provide you and the students with a mini-lesson on using context clues and using root words, prefixes, and suffixes.

This vocabulary resource reviews the types of context clues and then provides the students with guided and independent practice on defining vocabulary terms utilizing the strategy of context clues. We also require that the student reviews which type of context clue they are using as added practice. The practice is provided at the sentence level, paragraph level, and within a longer text.

We then provide the students with an opportunity to identify root words, prefixes, and suffixes and then use that knowledge to define unfamiliar vocabulary terms. This provides the students with an alternative to using context clues.

Teaching vocabulary strategies is essential for students to be more successful in their academic classes. We are not able to look up every unfamiliar word so we need to teach our students strategies to help them provide working definitions.
