Many of our students struggle to paraphrase textual evidence and put it in their own words. They often copy the text word for word, resulting in plagiarism. We created this packet to teach our students the strategy of paraphrasing using the 4 R’s: Realize, Replace, Rearrange, and Recheck.
Many of our students struggle to paraphrase textual evidence and put it in their own words. They often copy the text word for word, resulting in plagiarism. We created this packet to teach our students the strategy of paraphrasing using the 4 R’s: Realize, Replace, Rearrange, and Recheck.
Here is an overview of the packet:
-Collect baseline data. This allows teachers to compare the students ability to paraphrase before and after implementing the strategy.
-Review how to cite evidence and use in-text citations.
-Sentence starters are provided to introduce evidence.
-A breakdown of the 4 R’s of Paraphrasing
-Each R includes: steps to follow, an example and guided practice
-10 practice examples are provided. This also includes a visual checklist.
-Textual evidence in this packet is written in the form of a direct quote and taken from the website ProCon.org.
-Blank practice sheets allow teachers to customize and choose their own evidence for their students to paraphrase.
-The Paraphrasing Rubric allows teachers to score the students ability to paraphrase using the 4 R’s.
